What is PETA-Approved Vegan?
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, is committed to protecting animal rights. By informing policy makers and raising awareness, the organization tries to improve animal welfare. The organization is active in various sectors: the livestock industry, test animal laboratories, the entertainment sector, but also the clothing industry. With the label “PETA-Approved Vegan”, brands can guarantee their customers that they do not use animal materials in their products. The quality mark is no guarantee for sustainable or people-friendly production.
What does PETA-Approved Vegan check for?
Products with the PETA-Approved Vegan label must be completely animal product free: that means that no animal substances may be used in production. The product is cruelty free.
Why is this label so important?
The clothing industry is really not that nice. A lot is hidden behind the nice sweaters, dresses and jeans that we see in the stores as we walk by. More and more of those stories are now coming out: we know about the inhumane working conditions of factory workers in developing countries and the huge amounts of discarded clothing in Africa. However, a part of the suffering is often left out: that of animals. For fabrics derived from animal products, such as wool, fur, leather and silk, the most animal-unfriendly practices are sometimes used. PETA is committed to protecting animal rights, providing a platform for those without a voice. Part of their tasks is informing people by putting the importance of animal rights on the political and public agenda and entering into dialogue with policymakers. On the other hand, they show consumers which brands are animal-friendly, by means of their quality mark. This way we are better informed with our next purchase.
